  Siraitia grosvenorii, also known as lahanguo, pseudomomordica charantia, luoluozi or guangguomubie, etc., is the fruit of Momordica grosvenorii, a gourd plant, planted in one year for many years. Siraitia grosvenorii is a unique economic and medicinal plant in China. It has been used for more than 300 years. It is distributed in tropical and Subtropical Mountainous areas such as Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan and Guizhou. Due to the special requirements for the growth environment, its main production areas are located in Yongfu County, Lingui county and Rongan County, Guilin City, Guangxi Province. Since 1977 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia, it has been collected as a common Chinese medicine. It has the effects of clearing away heat and moistening the lung, smoothing the intestine and relieving constipation. It is mainly used to treat cough due to lung heat or lung dryness, pertussis, phlegm fire cough, blood dryness and constipation. pharmacological action

Antioxidation

Siraitia grosvenorii concentrated juice and saponins significantly reduced the high levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride in hyperlipidemia model mice induced by high-fat diet, and increased the reduced HDL-C in the model mice. Siraitia grosvenorii extract and 11-mogroside V can inhibit copper ion-mediated and HUVEC mediated LDL oxidation in a dose-dependent manner, and reduce the contents of malonyl thiourea and other active substances in liver and plasma. Siraitia grosvenorii saponins can reduce the content of serum free fatty acid and malondialdehyde, increase the content of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, and improve the total antioxidant capacity of serum. In the rat liver cancer model induced by piperonyl butyl ether, Momordica grosvenorii extract increased the antioxidant activities of glutathione-S-transferase and glutathione peroxidase and the mRNA level of two-phase enzyme in liver. This antioxidant effect was achieved by transcriptional up regulation of gene expression controlled by nrf2-keap1 antioxidant response element. It was found that Momordica grosvenorii extract inhibited the nasal scratching induced by histamine and the skin scratching induced by compound 48 / 80 in ICR mice by preventing the production of superoxide anion and inhibiting the release of histamine from mast cells. These functions of Siraitia grosvenorii are related to their antioxidant activities. In vitro experiments confirmed that Siraitia grosvenorii extract, momordoside V and 11-oxo-mogroside V had strong antioxidant activity and scavenging activity of reactive oxygen radicals.

 

Effect on diabetes

Momordoside extract significantly decreased the activities of heme oxygenase-1, manganese superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in diabetic model, inhibited the expression of heme oxygenase-1 and manganese superoxide dismutase mRNA, increased the level of serum HDL-C, up-regulated the expression of renal heme oxygenase-1 and manganese superoxide dismutase mRNA, activated liver antioxidant enzymes, and reduced diabetic rats Urinary albumin and urine volume can relieve some symptoms of diabetic nephropathy. For severe islet injury in insulin-dependent diabetic mice, taking Mogroside extract can effectively improve the clinical symptoms of diabetes and insulin response, increase the secretion of pancreatic total insulin and reduce the pathological damage of islets. It was found that Mogroside had no effect on blood glucose of normal mice. However, it can inhibit the activity of maltase in small intestine of rats and increase of blood glucose induced by single dose of oral maltose, but it has no effect on the increase of blood glucose caused by taking glucose. In vitro experiments further confirmed that the total glucosides of Siraitia grosvenorii, momordoside Ⅲ, Ⅴ, Ⅳ and saimenoside could inhibit the activity of intestinal maltase.

Effect on liver

The results showed that Mogroside had no effect on the activity of liver enzymes in normal human. However, in CCl4 induced acute liver injury in mice, chronic liver injury model in rats and immune liver injury model induced by BCG and LPS, Mogroside decreased the activities of serum glutamyl aminotransferase and glutamyl aminotransferase, and increased the activity of superoxide dismutase in liver tissue It can reduce the pathological changes of liver tissue and protect liver injury. The study on exhausted mice showed that Momordica grosvenorii extract significantly prolonged the swimming time of mice, promoted the synthesis of hemoglobin, reduced the production of lactic acid in blood and accelerated its clearance. This study showed that Momordica grosvenorii extract had obvious protective effect on liver tissue and membrane structure damage caused by exercise.

Anticancer effect

Siraitia grosvenorii saponins can inhibit the early antigen of Epstein Barr virus induced by tumor promoter TPA. Momordoside V and 11-oxo-mogroside V have strong inhibitory effects on the second stage carcinogenesis of mouse skin induced by peroxynitrite ion as initiator and tPA as cancer promoter. In the model of mice liver cancer induced by decinil, it was found that Momordica grosvenorii extract inhibited the expression of CYP1A1, thus inhibiting the production of liver cancer.
